Unemployment in Erie County is still at around 11%. In our corner of the construction world, some of the hardest-hit seems to be certain pockets of commercial work. Also, based on several conversations with some of the suppliers and distributors around town, I suspect that some of the high unemployment numbers are coming from them if only because the backlog of product is enormous.
The good news? There are still plenty of quality jobs to be had!
Below are a few of the positions I am working to fill today:
- Diesel Mechanic—This could be someone with soft skills that can be developed or a 10-year veteran, but you should absolutely have some knowledge on excavators, Tractors, Box trucks, etc.
- Commercial Roofer—A vehicle and set of basic hand tools are a must everything else we can teach.
- CDL Driver—Your main job is to deliver material to a job site, but you should be okay with a little bit of laboring if needed, overnights, and travel involved. Mechanic skills a plus
- Window & Door installer/carpenter—A minimum of 1 season is a must, but the most important thing is to be teachable and reliable.
- Experienced Electrician—You should have at least 2 years of commercial experience under your belt with your own tools and be able to get from one end of the county to the other.
- Maintenance Mechanic—You’ll need to be able to troubleshoot using PLCs and have good electrical and mechanical aptitude. Should be familiar with an industrial setting
- Brick Mason—Experience laying block and brick, most of the work will be Commercial & Industrial, probably a 5+ year guy
- Vinyl Siding—If you can work a brake you’re gold, roofing experience a plus
- Kitchen & Bath Carpenter—On top of your 2-3 years experience as a carpenter, you should know a little bit about plumbing and electrical as well as drywall
