My objective in this post is to entice entry-level talent to consider a career as an artisan in the trade of drywall finishing.
As long as I am being candid, if I am to invest in entry-level, I would prefer to hire someone with management potential.
Finishing drywall is an art form not unlike a fine painting, a sculpture, or a symphony. The true artist will work to a rhythm. He’ll establish a tempo and manage the flow of his job site.
Benefits of a career as a drywall finisher:
- You’ll make great money. Very entry-level probably starts at $15ish. You’ll be tutored and mentored by some of the best. As your skills grow, so will your income. By the end of the first year, most apprentices will have a compensation package worth around $22/hr. Right now a very skilled mechanic can enjoy a package worth in the neighborhood of $36/hr.
- You’ll enjoy incredible job security. In my 30 years in the construction trades, I have never known a drywall finisher to be without an income.
- You’ll find fulfillment in your work. What artist doesn’t enjoy his craft?
- People will watch you work and be amazed. The fruits of your labor will endure for years.
