The labor shortage is not nearly as bad as we think.
We don’t (necessarily) need more training programs and vocational schools!
News flash: most folks in the trades right now never had formal training. I learned carpentry because the guy I worked for mentored me! I’m betting you learned at the school of hard knocks as well.
What we need are construction companies who are progressive enough to carve job training and mentoring into their culture. Instead what I see too often are middle school playground hazing rituals for whatever rookie dares to venture onto the veterans jobsite.
So..The reason I wrote this post is because I’ve interviewed some sharp people who are looking for sharp construction companies to work for. Many of them are in the $13-$15 range. Most will need some coaching—but I bet they are good investments.
