The person we are looking for could easily manage their own construction or heavy equipment company. Our future Equipment and Transportation Department Manager might currently be a small business President or a General Manager. The level of responsibility for this job easily rivals that of many small businesses.
We own a substantial inventory of cranes, loaders, forklifts, tractors, trailers, and all sorts of really specialized equipment. Occasionally something breaks, and everything needs maintenance. You have two heavy equipment mechanics at your disposal. There are a dozen project managers, each running a handful of projects, each needing specific equipment at very specific times. In addition, the dispatcher, superintendents and a team of administrative folks are under your charge. Your job is to ensure all happens smoothly and efficiently.
We install heavy machinery and equipment primarily in the Great Lakes Region. Our specialty is doing stuff that is too big for everyone else to handle—hauling, underwater construction, heavy highway, and bridgework.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage all department operations
- Vendor-managed inventory, 3rd party rentals versus purchasing tools, preventative maintenance, inspection, calibration programs, asset management, etc.
- Sourcing and submit all capital equipment requests.
- Labor and equipment job costing.
- Enforce and create procedures and policies.
- Create goals and objectives for the department that are measurable.
- Responsible for the direct supervision of:
- Our heavy equipment mechanics
- Dispatcher
- Tool and Equipment superintendent(s)
- All office support personnel for these departments.
- Manage the fleet operation
- Preventative maintenance, record keeping, and problem resolution.
- Oversee DOT compliance and reporting as it relates to the fleet.
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs.
- Communicate with customers, personnel, outside vendors and agencies regarding our equipment.
- Communicate and coordinate with all 3rd party trucking and rental providers
The Best Candidate is
- A systems and process thinker (it’s a personality thing that you cannot fake). Your job is not only to enforce but to design and manage processes so that things run better.
- A strong manager. If you think about the number of moving pieces demanding your decisions, it could be intimidating. If you miss the call then dozens of guys could be standing and not working. Project Managers have strong personalities. Machines never break at a convenient time. Your job is to keep everybody productive and profitable.
- Happy to live with the consequences of their own decisions
- Probably a person with a heavy mechanical background
