Entry-Level HVAC Tool List: 15 Tools Beginners Should Own

One of the best ways to stand out is to show that you are worthy of an apprenticeship and that a company would be smart to invest in you. Having basic hand tools, showing up on time, listening, asking good questions, and being willing to work are all part of that.

There are two schools of thought on what to buy. One is to go to Lowes or Harbor Freight and buy a complete kit, cheap so you can get started. The other is what I did which was to buy a very basic starter kit, and then buy quality, slowly and for keeps. I suppose it just depends on your personality.

This list was provided by one of our most respected HVAC clients. In their company, the more tools you own, the more money you make.

15 Tools for Entry-Level HVAC Technicians

1. 25-Foot Tape Measure

Anything less than 25′ is useless in real world applications. If you don’t know how to read it, my advice is to NOT get the one with the helper fractions on it. The helper fractions are well intentioned like training wheels but the trouble is that in my 30 years in the business, I have never once heard of them actually teaching a person to read a tape. My vote is no. Instead just learn how to read it.

2. Razor Knife

It doesn’t need to be fancy, but do make sure it has a retractable blade.

3. Klein Multi-bit Stubby Screwdriver

4. Klein 14-in-1 or Klein 11-in-1 Screwdriver

Spend the money for what will be the most used tool in your kit

5. Crescent Wrenches / Adjustable Wrenches

If you just buy one, start with the 6″ and then add up from there

6. Channel Locks

Cheap channel locks tend to be useless when you need them to work the most. When they slip, you muck everything up and smash your knuckles all at the same time. Buy quality.

7. Flashlight

Flashlight is good. Headlamp is best. My current favorite is a Black Diamond LT 1000 (but it’s a little pricy)

8. Side Cutters

A good 7″ or 8″ is invaluable. I bought a 5″ micro cutter and find myself using them all the time just for fun.

9. Klein Wire Cutter and Stripper

There are plenty of other brands. Just get something decent

10. Tool Bag or Tool Pouch

If you’ve acquired the list so far and in this order, then you’ve kind of got enough to make a bag look useful. Home Depot and Lowe’s have a ton of options in the center of the tool corral. It’s like Harry Potter picking out his wizard wand—something will call to you.

11. Non-Contact Voltage Tester

A non-contact voltage tester helps you quickly check whether power may be present before touching wires or components. It is not a replacement for proper electrical testing, but it is a basic safety tool worth owning. If you are new, ask questions and follow the company’s safety procedures.

12. Cordless Impact Driver

Put some thought into this when you buy it, because what you might not know is that you’re getting married to a brand when you buy your first cordless tool. Because the next tool you buy will share the same battery—and the batteries cost as much as the bare tool. I personally like Milwaukee, but it might be because that was my first cordless years ago. For all I know, the others are just as good!

13. Bit Tips for Impact — 1/4 Inch Through 1/2 Inch

An impact driver is only useful if you have the right bits. Common nut driver bits are important because HVAC equipment panels and sheet metal screws come in different sizes. Keep extras in your bag because bits disappear.

14. Torpedo Level

A small torpedo level helps you check whether something is level or pitched correctly. This can matter with equipment, drain lines, line sets, and certain installation details. It is inexpensive and easy to keep in your bag.

15. Inspection Mirror

An inspection mirror helps you see behind equipment, under parts, around corners, and into tight areas. HVAC equipment is often installed in awkward spaces, and a small mirror can save time and frustration.

Final Thoughts

If you are trying to get into HVAC, do not let the tool list scare you. Most good technicians build their tool collection over time. The important thing is to start with the basics, take care of what you own, and keep learning. Showing up with basic tools tells an employer that you are serious. Showing up willing to work, listen, and learn matters even more.
