Metals Industry, Working Warehouse Manager
The job is 80% on the floor of the warehouse. As a working manager the expectation would be that you would be on the floor willing, able, and quick to jump in to help out wherever you are physically needed to get the job done. That might mean that you unload a truck because someone is on break. It could mean that you jump on a saw because someone called off sick. You’ll have an office where you should be spending probably no more than 20% of your time.
The Warehouse Manager answers to Dan. Let me tell you what he expects from his Buffalo Warehouse Manager.
Dan absolutely needs someone who is not afraid to make a decision and live with the consequences. He hates micro-managing. His philosophy is, if he has to micro-manage your job then why does he even need you? That said, he absolutely expects that his managers meet his result metrics. He likes systems and proper orchestration. He’s a fan of Microsoft Outlook and huge whiteboards. Once you show that you’ve got it under control, he’ll gladly give you full autonomy. If it tells you anything about him, he earned his management skills in the military.
Key Result Areas (as interpreted by jk)
- Production Quantifiable production metrics are laid out, expected and bonused upon. Your job is quite simply to meet or exceed those expectations.
- Scheduling Manpower and trucking routes for three trucks. There are eleven employees that cover three shifts—they’re all yours to mobilize.
- Daily maintenance of equipment.
- Shipping/Receiving Product in—product out. Crate, load, and unload.
- Facilities Building upgrades and maintenance.
- Ongoing training Attend seminars, certifications, etc.
There are four criteria required for this job
- The right “soft” skills.
- The mechanical and physical capability to do any job on the campus
- The office skills necessary (computer, paperwork, basic bookkeeping, etc) to communicate effectively & keep things running smoothly
- So what about the industry and product knowledge? Of course it’s a plus but certainly not an absolute. Demonstrate your ability to be a quick study—the first three are the biggest challenge to find in most candidates.
